All who are able and willing to fast with us for this Oasis Meeting, come do so. We will focus on prayer together this month. For those who are unable to fast, there will be refreshments available, just not that awesome breakfast that Marilyn usually dishes up for us.

This Saturday marks the beginning of Ramadan. During the next 30 days Muslims observe the Fast of Ramadan in hopes of atoning their sins before Allah. We will join the millions of Christians around the world who are praying for Muslims during Ramadan. See http://www.30-days.net/ for more info. Also see www.30-days.net/islam/why-pray-for-muslims/

Vocabulary List

Trying to learn Arabic?  I’ve created a vocabulary list of words that I quickly recall in order to speak to a Middle Eastern woman (in my case, as I am a woman, too.  You will want to only approach someone of the same gender.).  Being in a college town, we have many opportunities to make our sisters feel welcome and to invite conversation.

I know of one woman who regularly attends my gym on Fridays.  I’ve seen other Middle Eastern families walking the grocery store with me.  If we know a handful of greetings to speak, we become a light in a very dark land for them.  A friendly face in a crowd of foreigners.

Middle Eastern Languages

Middle Eastern Languages

Marilyn Atkinson always has something to say in English or otherwise.  If you’ve met her, you’ll not forget this forward and friendly woman.  With a woman in a hijab, she uses the phrase, “Marhaba!”  This means welcome or hello in Arabic.

Isis Faraq is a new Egyptian friend of ours who is eager to teach anyone who is willing to learn Arabic.  The Raindrop Society on A&M Campus teaches people Turkish.  The volunteers are members of the Turkish Student Association and they offer language classes several times a week.

Arabic, Turkish, Pashto, Farsi, Urdu?  It’s all Greek to me, eh?  There are Continue reading
